Shelf space is shrinking, and publishers open print schedules are getting pretty far out. There will eventually be a turn in the tide of alternative publishing. Of course all of this is my own speculation, and we’ll soon see just how accurate I am.
Currently, printed books or trade publications are the measurement of success. Why are people so ashamed to self publish, or have a story published in a webzine, or some other type of medium. I think writers are boxed in when made to feel like published works are only valid when in a book or magazine. This is the digital age. A lot more content is going to be published in digital format and not in books.
Don’t get me wrong, if a publisher wanted to buy one of my stories for book print, I’d do what I could to make that happen. There is something magical about having a book published with your name on it. But it isn’t the end all.
My suggestion, don’t hesitate to get your work published where you can, especially if you will be paid.
