Props To My Peeps: Several People To Thank This Week

Today I wanted to give props to two people who need to be recognized as outstanding individuals.

The first is Tamera Tanner. I met Tamara through Twitter, mainly because we have a common interest, horses. Tamara runs an outstanding foundation, The Straighter Way Foundation, that uses horses in therapeutic settings. Basically, the foundation gives people who wouldn’t normally get the chance to have an opportunity to experience what its like to ride a horse.

The next person I want to give a shout out too is David N Wilson. It wasn’t a big thing, but it was much appreciated. David re-tweeted my request to talk to someone about conventions. I appreciate the effort David. And, did you know that David is a rock star author? Well then, hurry on over to his web site and learn more about his writing. And more importantly, buy some of his books.

Props To My Peeps: Rachel Strate

Today I want to give a shout out to my friend Rachel Strate. Last week she put out a call on Twitter for people to donate their blood platelets at a local blood bank. This is thinking outside the box to help a community, using social media. And the fun part was, Rachel isn’t even in Salt Lake. I think she’s currently on a climbing expedition in Texas. Right Rachel?

Props To My Peeps: Sundance Tweetup For Charity

Last week, Cary Snowden of SocialHat, and Kelly King Anderson of Startup Princess, put together a Tweetup at the Park City Ski Resort. While tweetups aren’t new, this one had a twist; give a donation at the door for a charity voted on at the end of the night. Now that is cool.

The event was also streamed live on Ustream. This allowed those who couldn’t attend in person to watch the event and also donate online. According to the SocialHat website, the event collected nearly $600, and had over two hundred participants both in person and on the Ustream feed. That is just amazing.

This is a great example of social network connections getting together offline for a good cause. At the end of the night the votes were counted and the selected charity was Lifting Up Serenity, a charity in the name of Serenity Burns, a two year old who lives in Utah and was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. I know Phil burns personally, and I think his foundation will benefit from the donation.

I don’t want to leave out the other charities that didn’t get this donation, but should be considered, because they can always use help. Please check out the list on the SocialHat web site. You can also find a list of attendees, those who volunteered, and those who were sponsors.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a Props To My Peeps, but today is the day I start again. I also want to show the power of social networks.

Earlier this morning I asked if someone would be willing to help me create a small graphic for my blog in return for me pimping their work and their web site. I had several inquires, and Sylvie Veillet was gracious enough to produce exactly what I was looking for. The image you see in this post is the result of her work.
